How PaidViewpoint works

PaidViewpoint is the survey panel of aytm (Ask Your Target Market), a market research company that started in 2008 and launched PaidViewpoint at SXSW in 2011. Every research survey you take was ordered by an aytm client, so there is no chain of third-party routers between you and the work.

There are two kinds of survey. Trait surveys are tiny question sets about you and your interests. They always pay a small amount, and some questions repeat a few days later to check that you answer consistently. Research surveys are the paid client work. PaidViewpoint says most take about 5 to 6 minutes, with around 10 questions, short answer options and no long matrix grids.

Its biggest selling point is on the homepage: you get paid "even if you get cut off halfway through a survey". Compare that with routers where a late screen-out pays nothing, and you can see why members who stick with it tend to like it.

TraitScore: what decides your pay

Pay per research survey is not fixed. Each survey aytm sells allocates a fixed pot to respondents, and the pot is divided according to your TraitScore, a measure of how candid and consistent your answers are. Higher-scoring members get more research surveys each month, within an overall monthly limit, and more money per answer.

Two things PaidViewpoint spells out are worth repeating. Answering "yes" to every trait question does not get you more surveys; being unusually positive or negative compared with other members makes the algorithm treat you as someone gaming the system. And the monthly cap is deliberate: PaidViewpoint follows Insights Association and ESOMAR practice of not over-surveying the same people.

Open-ended answers matter too. A QA team reviews them; too many rejected answers hurt your account standing and can cost you early cash outs and gift cards. Especially good answers earn "kudos", a small bonus that raises your standing.

Cashing out, and the rules that freeze balances

Your first cash out needs $15 and must go to PayPal. If your account is in good standing, the second cash out unlocks at $10 and every one after that at $5, and gift cards appear where available in your country. PaidViewpoint reserves the right to put any member back on the $15 threshold at any time. After you cash out, allow up to 72 hours for the money to reach PayPal. There are no cheques, money orders or other methods, so you need a PayPal account to get paid at all.

The rules below come straight from PaidViewpoint's support page and rewards rules. They are the source of most angry reviews, so read them before you start:

• Phone validation. You validate a phone number at sign-up and again at each cash out. It must be a real, private number in your country of residence; VoIP numbers such as Google Chat or Skype are not allowed.
• Changing your PayPal email or phone number forces a choice: zero your balance, or freeze it for 180 days. Change them only right after a cash out.
• Travel. If you go more than 200 km (about 125 miles) from your registered location, or cross a state or provincial border, do not log in until you get back, or update your address. If you are abroad, do not log in at all.
• One account per person. PaidViewpoint watches IP addresses and proxy use. A duplicate account closes every account and cancels the rewards.
• Unredeemed rewards are not yours yet. The rules say credited rewards stay the property of Umongous until you redeem them, and that rewards are cancelled if the service ever shuts down.

The referral programme, exactly

PaidViewpoint's referral terms are unusually precise. When a friend joins with your personal link, you earn 20% of what they make from research surveys (not trait surveys), paid when they cash out, up to a lifetime cap of $25 per friend. A friend who cashes out $100 earns you $20; a friend who cashes out $200 still earns you $25.

Members with 100 or more active referrals can apply for VIP Community Builder status, which pays the 20% every time a friend completes a research survey instead of waiting for their cash out. PaidViewpoint also asks referrers not to promise big money or daily surveys, which is the right instinct.

Is PaidViewpoint legit?

Yes. It has run since 2011 as the panel of aytm, a research company, and the operator, Umongous, Inc., publishes detailed rewards rules. Its own FAQ is refreshingly honest: "PaidViewpoint really shouldn't be considered a source of income or work."

The 2.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot (281 reviews) is mostly about enforcement rather than non-payment. Reviewers describe suspensions for suspected duplicate accounts or out-of-area logins, and support replies they found accusatory. PaidViewpoint replies that it asks for documentation and reinstates accounts it wrongly flagged. Our read: the system is strict and occasionally wrong, so follow the travel and phone rules to the letter.

How to get the most out of PaidViewpoint

• Turn on email and SMS alerts. Research surveys are first come, first served, and PaidViewpoint never sends a second alert.
• Answer trait surveys honestly and the same way each time; consistency is what raises your TraitScore.
• Write real open-ended answers. Kudos raise your standing, rejections lower it.
• Never log in on holiday or from a different state, and never change your PayPal email or phone with money in the account.
• Reach the $15 first cash out, then keep your standing clean so the $5 threshold kicks in.
• Pair it with a higher-volume panel such as Prime Opinion or Ipsos iSay, or a better-paying one such as Prolific.
