Prolific Review 2026: Enforced Hourly Pay, a Waitlist, and Strict Account Holds

How Prolific works

Prolific is a research recruitment platform, not a survey router. Researchers at universities, AI companies and product teams post studies, set the reward, and choose who can take part using prescreening filters drawn from the "About You" answers on your profile. If you match, the study appears on your Studies page.

You click Start, consent, and complete the study on the researcher's own tool, often Qualtrics, Gorilla or Typeform. At the end you return to Prolific, sometimes with a completion code. The researcher then reviews your submission and approves it, which moves the reward into your balance.

Studies without prescreening are first come, first served. Prolific also spreads studies across the pool, so if you have done a lot recently you may see fewer for a while. It says 700+ studies launch every day. There is no mobile app: you use the website, and the official Prolific Assistant browser extension alerts you to new studies.

What Prolific pays, and how the floor is enforced

This is what sets Prolific apart. Every study must pay at least $8 / £6 an hour, and Prolific recommends researchers pay $12 / £9 or more. The rate is checked against the median time participants actually take, not the researcher's estimate. If a 20-minute study turns out to take 40, it is flagged as underpaying, the researcher is told to send an adjustment bonus, and researchers who do not fix underpaying studies within 22 days have their accounts suspended.

Screen-outs are handled differently from most survey sites too. Researchers can only screen you out mid-study through Prolific's approved methods, and you are paid for the screening questions. On the newest version that is a guaranteed minimum of $0.14 / £0.10, and being screened out does not affect your account. If you would rather skip these studies entirely, untick in-study screening in your study filters.

Some participants with high approval rates are invited to an AI Task Assessment. Passing it unlocks AI-evaluation studies, such as fact-checking or reviewing model outputs, which Prolific says typically pay more because they are more complex.

Keep expectations in proportion. Prolific's own help centre says it "is not intended to be a full-time job", and it cannot guarantee studies every day. Weekends and holidays are quieter because researchers launch studies in their working hours.

Getting in: the waitlist and ID check

You must be over 18 and live in a supported country. Eligibility depends on where you live, not your nationality. Most OECD countries are covered, and Prolific's participant eligibility article listed 52 countries in September 2026. Prolific's own pages do not quite agree on the list, so check that article for your country before signing up.

New sign-ups join a waitlist. It is not a queue: invitations go out based on which demographics and skills researchers currently need, so Prolific says some people are invited within hours while others wait months or longer. Support cannot tell you your position or speed it up.

Once invited, you verify your identity with Onfido, an Entrust company. You photograph a physical ID document (no photocopies or screenshots) and record a short selfie video turning your head. Prolific says Onfido shares only your name, date of birth and the issuing country of your ID with it. If you fail verification you cannot have an account, and you are not allowed to rejoin with a new one.

Cashing out

Researchers pay in US dollars or British pounds, and Prolific keeps both balances. You can cash out once the two together reach $6 / £6, and both go to PayPal in their original currencies. Prolific says payment arrives within 24 hours, usually much sooner. Your first four cash outs, and any cash out after you change your PayPal details, have a 72-hour cool-off; after that you can cash out once every 24 hours.

The PayPal rules are strict, and they cause many account holds:

• US residents need a US-based PayPal account. Everyone else needs PayPal registered in their country of residence or country of birth.
• One PayPal account per Prolific account. If a PayPal is linked to two Prolific accounts, both are put on hold.
• Set PayPal to accept both USD and GBP. Never refuse a payment in either currency: it blocks future payments in that currency and temporarily disables cash outs.
• You cannot take studies or cash out while abroad, even on holiday. Cash out before you travel.

Approvals and rejections

Researchers usually approve submissions within a few days. Anything still unreviewed after 22 days is approved automatically. Rejections remove the reward and count against your record, so it pays to know the rules Prolific gives researchers:

• Allowed: rejecting submissions completed far faster than the median time, failed attention checks, clearly low-effort answers, and free-text answers written with AI tools such as ChatGPT unless the study asks you to use one.
• Not allowed: rejecting you only for a missing or wrong completion code, rejecting you for being slow (slow submissions time out instead), or rejecting you for skipping a question that was not marked as required.
• Technical problems: message the researcher and return the study straight away. Returning a study does not hurt your account; submitting a broken one can get it rejected.

If you think a rejection was unfair, message the researcher first. If that does not resolve it, open the support chatbot and choose to dispute a rejection; Prolific also offers mediation between participants and researchers.

Is Prolific legit? Yes, but know about account holds

Prolific was co-founded at Oxford University in 2014, and the company behind it, Prolific Academic Ltd, is an active UK company. It holds a 4.5 out of 5 TrustScore from 15,402 Trustpilot reviews, and Trustpilot's summary of recent reviews highlights fast payouts and an easy-to-use site.

The complaint that dominates its 1- and 2-star reviews from September and October 2026 is account holds. Reviewers describe accounts with long, clean histories being put on hold by automated checks, generic replies from support, and appeals that end with a final no. Others mention repeated ID re-verification, studies that show places but turn out to be full, and discomfort with the biometric ID check.

Prolific's help centre is open about how holds work. Common triggers include being in a different country from your account, using a VPN, a PayPal from the wrong country or shared with another account, a high number of rejections, multiple or shared accounts, and using AI to complete studies. It does not tell you which one applied. Appeals can take up to four weeks, and an upheld hold is final. Your approved balance is not lost: you can cash it out even if it is below the $6 / £6 minimum.

Does Prolific have a referral bonus?

Mostly no. You can tell friends to join the waitlist, but in general you are not paid for it. Prolific occasionally runs a paid referral campaign to recruit specific groups, and the referral page only appears in your account while one is live and you are eligible. Its original open referral scheme ended in March 2019.

How to get the most out of Prolific

• Fill in every "About You" question and keep it current. Prescreening runs on those answers, and researchers may re-ask them inside a study to check.
• Install the official Prolific Assistant extension and keep it running on weekdays, when researchers launch most studies.
• Read the study description and estimated time before you start, and take the study on the device it asks for.
• Return a study rather than submitting it if something breaks or you run out of time.
• Never use a VPN or iCloud Private Relay, and log in from one device at a time.
• Link a PayPal in your own name and country before your first cash out, and set it to accept both USD and GBP.
• Pair it with a no-screen-out panel such as PaidViewpoint, or a no-minimum app such as Qmee, while you wait for your invitation.
