Pinecone Research Review 2026: No Longer Invite-Only, a $10 Gift Card Minimum and Expiring Points

Facts checked October 10, 2026

Pinecone Research is no longer the invite-only panel that paid a flat $3 a survey. NielsenIQ and ROI Rocket now run it as an open points site: a $5 welcome reward, typical surveys worth 100 to 300 points ($1 to $3), cash outs from $10 in gift cards and Visa cards only, points that expire a year after you earn them, and a layer of sweepstakes and games. Its at-home product tests and paid focus groups are still the most interesting thing it offers, but long-time members describe more screen-outs and smaller rewards since the change, and its Trustpilot score is 1.3. Join it for product tests if you like, and cash out the moment you reach $10.

How we scored it

  • Payment reliability2 / 5

Gift codes arrive by email straight away, but points expire after a year and reviewers report uncredited surveys and unavailable redemptions.

  • Earning potential2 / 5

Typical surveys pay 100 to 300 points ($1 to $3) and average 15 to 20 minutes; focus groups and in-store tests pay more but you have to qualify for them.

  • Cash-out flexibility2 / 5

$10 minimum, gift cards and Visa cards only, and no PayPal since the relaunch.

  • Availability3 / 5

Separate sites for the US, UK, Canada and Germany, from age 18, one account per household.

  • Member experience1 / 5

1.3 on Trustpilot from 359 unsolicited reviews and 2.7 on Google Play, with complaints about screen-outs, closed surveys and support.

How Pinecone Research works now

Pinecone Research calls itself a new products panel: it asks members for opinions on product ideas that are not yet on sale. Its privacy notice names NielsenIQ and ROI Rocket as the companies running it, and its membership agreement lists ROIRocket.com, LLC among its owners and partners.

Joining is now open to anyone eligible. You create an account with an email address and password, take a profile survey Pinecone says lasts about 5 minutes, and receive a $5 welcome reward. Everything you earn after that is in points, at 100 points to $1.

Besides surveys, you can earn from at-home product tests, quizzes and polls, profile surveys and games, and most activities also give you sweepstakes entries. Not everything pays: the membership agreement says household questions, which Pinecone uses to route surveys to the right homes, are not compensated.

What changed

For most of its history, Pinecone was known for two things: you could only join through an invitation, and each survey paid a flat amount. Long-time members on Trustpilot describe two or three surveys a month at $3 each, paid to PayPal with no minimum.

Members date the change to around September 2025, when a new site arrived with many more surveys, points instead of a flat rate, gift card cash outs from $10, and no PayPal. Reviewers since then describe smaller rewards for similar work (one UK member says surveys worth at least £3 now pay closer to £1), more screening questions, and surveys that have already closed by the time they click the link.

Pinecone's own pages have not caught up with each other. Its sign-up page says your details match you with surveys "you're guaranteed to qualify for", while its FAQ says some surveys use screener questions at the start to check that you qualify.

Surveys, product tests and pay

Pinecone says typical surveys pay 100 to 300 points, or $1 to $3, and its membership agreement says most interviews average 15 to 20 minutes. The example projects on its homepage show the spread:

  • Surveys and studies: $0.75 for a 12-minute lifestyle survey, $2 for a 10-minute parents survey, $2 for a 20-minute travel survey, $2.50 for a 20-minute taste test, and $2 for a 45-minute TV show study.
  • Larger projects: $150 for a 2-hour Zoom focus group, $200 for a 60-minute in-store shopping mission, and $200 for a migraine clinical trial.

Product tests are where Pinecone still stands out. If a survey offers a sample and you accept, the product is shipped to your home, and you answer a follow-up survey after using it. Pinecone says the most common test products are wearable technology, hygiene products, food, drinks and pet supplies. Check what a test pays before you accept: one US reviewer says he spent 12 days testing a razor and was paid 100 points ($1) for the follow-up survey.

Every survey starts with a confidentiality agreement. Discussing a survey, posting product names online, copying ideas or letting someone outside your household see a product can get you removed and your points cancelled, and the agreement says it may be grounds for legal action.

Cashing out and expiring points

You can redeem once you have 1,000 points, which Pinecone's FAQ calls $10. The options are a virtual or physical Visa card, an Amazon gift code, or one of about 1,800 other gift cards. There is no PayPal option on the current site. Digital codes are emailed to you as soon as you redeem; a physical Visa card takes 7 to 10 days.

Points expire one year after they are awarded. On the 366th day, any points from that award that you have not redeemed are removed, and Pinecone always spends your oldest points first. A UK reviewer in August 2026 wrote that 300 expired points were deducted just before they would have reached the redemption threshold. If you leave the panel, you forfeit any points left in your account.

Pinecone's terms also let it withhold or reverse any reward that came from a system error, duplicate activity or abuse, or that a research client later rejects or claws back. Its privacy notice says it may ask for your name, address and Social Security number for tax reporting.

Sweepstakes, quizzes and games

The US site runs a $100 daily, $250 weekly and $1,000 monthly prize draw, plus occasional large prizes: a 2024 grand prize winner received $50,000. Completing surveys, profiles and quizzes, scanning a receipt or confirming your email earns entries. On the US site, quizzes and polls earn sweepstakes entries; the UK, Canadian and German sites show them at 1 point each.

Treat the draws as a bonus you will almost certainly not win, and the quizzes as a way to keep your account active rather than a way to earn.

Account rules

Pinecone's membership agreement is stricter than most survey sites'. The rules that matter:

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • Only one account per person and one per household. Duplicate registrations are cancelled and their rewards voided.
  • No one in your household or immediate family may work for a consumer packaged goods company, a market research firm or in advertising.
  • When you join, you confirm that you have told everyone in your household about the agreement and privacy notice and have their permission to consent on their behalf.
  • Pinecone can admit or refuse anyone for any reason, its decisions on suspected abuse are final, and disputes go to individual arbitration in New York.
  • Pinecone says it will never ask you to pay, cash a check, wire money or reveal passwords, and that its emails come from Scott@pineconeresearch.com.

Is Pinecone Research legit?

Yes, in the sense that it is a real panel run by NielsenIQ, a long-established consumer research company, and it does not charge members anything. Its own marketing figures do not hold up well, though: its homepage says it has paid over $51 million in rewards since 2000, its sign-up page says nearly $90 million, and its UK, Canadian and German sites claim the same "51 million" in pounds, dollars and euros, with the UK and German sites dating it to 1998 instead.

On Trustpilot it scores 1.3 out of 5 from 359 reviews, 85% of them one star. Pinecone has not claimed the profile and has never invited reviews, so these are unsolicited. Its Android app, published under the developer name Oceanside Ten (which also publishes the ClearVoice Surveys app), holds 2.7 stars from 341 reviews.

The complaints since the relaunch follow a pattern: long screeners that end in disqualification with nothing paid, surveys listed that are already closed, rewards cut sharply, completed surveys that did not credit, a support form that fails to load, and redemptions shown as temporarily unavailable.

Our read: Pinecone is a legitimate company, but the panel that earned its reputation no longer exists. As it stands, it is a points site with a $10 gift card minimum and expiring points. If you join, do it for the product tests, keep your profile complete, and redeem at every 1,000 points.

How to get the most out of Pinecone Research

  • Complete every profile section, since Pinecone uses them to match you to surveys and product tests.
  • Redeem as soon as you reach 1,000 points rather than letting points age toward expiry.
  • Accept product test invitations if you are happy to use the product and answer a follow-up survey.
  • Answer screeners consistently and honestly; false or inconsistent answers can end your membership.
  • Note the project ID before you start, since Pinecone's contact form asks for it.
  • Never discuss or post about products you see in a survey.
  • Pair it with a survey site that pays to PayPal, such as PaidViewpoint or Prolific.
