How Swagbucks works
Swagbucks launched in Southern California in 2008 and is owned by Prodege, which also owns ySense. Everything you do earns SB, its points currency, and 100 SB is always worth $1. You redeem SB in the Rewards Store for PayPal cash, gift cards or charity donations.
Surveys are only one of several ways to earn. Swagbucks also pays SB for cashback shopping through its Shop pages, uploading grocery receipts with Magic Receipts, playing games, completing offers on the Discover page, searching the web, the Daily Poll and Swag Codes posted on its social channels. For most members, the shopping and offers side earns more than surveys do.
The $10 welcome bonus is worth reading closely. It is a 1,000 SB Swag Up that you must activate, and it only pays when you spend at least $25 in a single purchase at an eligible store through Swagbucks within 30 days. Amazon, eBay, The Home Depot, MyGiftCardsPlus, travel and flat-rate cashback purchases do not count.
Surveys and disqualifications
Swagbucks surveys come from outside research companies looking for specific people. Its help centre is open that "not everyone gets credit for every survey they take": if your answers show you are not the target, or the quota fills, the survey ends early. Each survey on your dashboard shows a percentage likelihood that you will qualify, and passing a pre-screener does not guarantee a place.
Some survey credit is not instant either. Swagbucks says certain surveys warn at the start that crediting can take up to 7 business days, and it may ask for screenshots to confirm a completion with the provider. Note the Survey ID before you start, so you can raise a ticket if the SB never arrives.
Your survey access can also be switched off. Swagbucks flags responses as invalid for:
- A date of birth that does not match the age you give in surveys
- Gibberish or off-topic open-ended answers
- Speeding through questions
- Failing trick ("red herring") questions
- Contradicting your profile, such as registering as female and answering as male
- Agreeing to a focus group or follow-up and not showing up
Too many invalid flags and your survey access is disabled. Many disqualifications are outside your control, but these ones are not.

PayPal starts at $5, which costs 530 SB rather than 500; the extra 30 SB covers PayPal's fees. Most gift cards, including Amazon, Walmart, Target and Google Play, start at $5 for 500 SB. Swagbucks' newest help article quotes 2 to 5 business days for PayPal and minutes to 5 business days for digital gift cards, while its older articles say to allow up to 10 business days. Swagbucks also mentions a monthly redemption limit.
First-time PayPal redemptions are where most people get stuck. Swagbucks requires:
- Your first and last name on Swagbucks to match your PayPal name exactly.
- A PayPal account confirmed by a linked bank account.
- The right PayPal account. Swagbucks' help articles disagree on whether your PayPal email must match your Swagbucks email or whether you can connect any PayPal login, so using the same email avoids the question.
- Verifying your reward within 7 days when asked, or the order is refunded to your SB balance.
US members who redeem $600 or more in a calendar year in taxable rewards, including surveys, are asked for tax details, and Swagbucks files a 1099. PayPal redemptions do not count toward that threshold.
Phone and ID verification
Swagbucks uses verification to stop duplicate and fraudulent accounts, and it is the source of many lockouts. Text verification needs a real mobile number in your own name, from a mobile carrier. VoIP, landline, Google Voice, Skype and disposable numbers are refused, and one number can verify only one account. Enter the wrong code too many times and Swagbucks says it cannot help further.
Some members are also asked for identity verification through Persona, a US ID company: a photo of a government ID and a selfie. Swagbucks says it usually takes minutes, with up to 10 more business days if its team needs to review. A suspended account can sometimes be restored straight away by passing this check.
One account per person is a hard rule. Everyone in a household can have their own account, but a second account, shared accounts, bots or scripts, and search or click patterns that break the terms can all lead to suspension or deactivation.
Is Swagbucks legit?
Yes. Swagbucks has run since 2008, its homepage counter showed $706,968,588 rewarded to members in October 2026, its Android app holds 4.2 stars from about 451,000 reviews, and it scores 4.0 out of 5 from 43,360 Trustpilot reviews. Trustpilot notes that Swagbucks invites its members to leave reviews, so its score mixes invited and unprompted reviews.
Its 1- and 2-star reviews from September and October 2026 repeat a few themes: frequent survey disqualifications, completed surveys that never credited, very low SB offers for long surveys (one UK reviewer was offered 1 SB for six minutes), deactivations after ID checks with a final decision and no specific reason, members locked out of cash outs by phone verification, SB clawed back for old cashback purchases, and slow or no replies to tickets.
Swagbucks' own support page sets the expectation: tickets are handled during weekday business hours, Pacific time, typically within 10 business days, and account issues such as deactivation, mobile verification and survey access can take longer, up to 30 business days in one section of the same article.
The referral programme
You earn 10% of what each referral earns from Answer, Shop, Magic Receipts, Discover and Play, including the mobile apps, for as long as they stay active, with no cap. Sign-up bonuses, Swag Codes, Daily Goal bonuses and referral bonuses do not count. If your referral earns 300 SB within their first 30 days, you both get a 300 SB bonus, though Swagbucks says that bonus is not available in every country.
How to get the most out of Swagbucks
- Fill in your profile honestly and use the same date of birth and details in every survey.
- Check the qualification percentage and length before starting a survey, and note the Survey ID.
- Set your Swagbucks name to match PayPal exactly and confirm PayPal with your bank before your first cash out.
- Verify with a real mobile number in your name; VoIP and Google Voice numbers will not work.
- Check the Activity Ledger before buying through a shopping offer, so you know the click tracked.
- Read the terms of the $10 welcome bonus before shopping; many stores and categories are excluded.
- Pair it with a survey-only platform that pays even when you are screened out, such as PaidViewpoint or Prolific.

Swagbucks FAQ
What is the minimum cash out on Swagbucks?
PayPal starts at $5 for 530 SB; the extra 30 SB covers PayPal's fees. Most gift cards start at $5 for 500 SB.
How long does Swagbucks take to pay?
Swagbucks' newest help article quotes 2 to 5 business days for PayPal and up to 5 business days for digital gift cards. Its older articles say to allow up to 10 business days.
How much is 1,000 SB worth?
$10. Swagbucks values every 100 SB at $1.
Which countries can use Swagbucks?
Residents of the United States and its territories, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, India and Canada who are 13 or older can redeem rewards.
Why does Swagbucks keep disqualifying me from surveys?
Research companies target specific people, so a survey ends if your answers do not fit or the quota fills. Speeding, failed trick questions and answers that contradict your profile also disqualify you and can get your survey access disabled.
Why was my Swagbucks account suspended?
Swagbucks lists more than one account, search or click patterns that break its terms, bots or scripts, and posting content that encourages policy violations. If an identity verification link appears when you log in, passing it can restore access; otherwise submit an account inquiry.
Is the Swagbucks $10 bonus real?
Yes, but it is conditional. You must activate it and spend at least $25 in one purchase at an eligible store through Swagbucks within 30 days. Amazon, eBay, The Home Depot, travel and some other purchases do not qualify.
