Best Survey Sites for Extra Income During Layoffs in 2026

Laid off in 2026? Paid surveys won't replace a paycheck, but the right sites pay quickly and reliably. What they really pay, and where to start.

Paid surveys will not replace a salary. Independent tests of the big survey sites have measured roughly $1 to $4 an hour. What they can do while you job hunt is turn spare half-hours into grocery money that arrives quickly, with nothing to apply for and nothing to pay. Here is where to start, and what each site really pays.

Why Surveys Fit a Job Search

You choose when to take them, most sites let you start the day you sign up, and you can stop the moment a recruiter calls. The trade-off is pay: surveys suit the gaps in your day, not a full shift. Treat them as a top-up and keep most of your time for the search itself.

Where to Start

Join three to five sites so there is usually something to take. All of these are open to join and pay out quickly:

  1. Ipsos iSay: one of our two highest-rated sites. Gift cards from $5 arrive instantly by email, and one long-term tester usually got a few points when screened out. A DollarSprout tester averaged $3 to $5 an hour. Join Ipsos iSay.
  2. Prime Opinion: our other highest-rated site. US members can cash out from $1 to Venmo, Cash App or a bank, or $5 to PayPal, and payouts arrive within a few hours. DollarBreak's seven-hour test came to about $1.62 an hour. Join Prime Opinion.
  3. PaidViewpoint: pays you even if a survey cuts you off halfway, and most surveys take 5 to 6 minutes. The first cash out is $15 to PayPal, then $10 and $5. DollarBreak measured about $3.05 an hour over five hours. Join PaidViewpoint.
  4. Survey Junkie: a $5 minimum, PayPal typically within a few hours, and a few points when you are disqualified. Real Reviews Lab averaged about $1.23 an hour over 60 hours. Join Survey Junkie.
  5. Branded Surveys: a $5 cash out, approved in 1 to 2 business days, or instantly once you complete 10 surveys in a calendar month. Two published tests found $1.47 and $2.20 an hour. Join Branded Surveys.

Prolific pays far better per hour, at least $8 / £6 on every study, but new sign-ups join a waitlist with no timeline. Join now so you are in the queue, and treat anything it sends as a bonus. Join Prolific.

What an Hour a Day Adds Up To

An hour a day is about 30 hours a month. At the $1 to $4 an hour independent testers found on most survey sites, that comes to roughly $30 to $120 a month, before any Prolific studies. That is our arithmetic from published tests, not a promise: your country, your profile and how many surveys you qualify for all move the number.

A Daily Routine That Fits Around Applications

  • Morning: check Prolific once you are let in. Studies without prescreening are first come, first served.
  • Midday: take whatever is waiting on PaidViewpoint and Ipsos iSay.
  • Evening: work through Prime Opinion, Survey Junkie and Branded Surveys, and stop when what is on offer is no longer worth your time.

Tips for Job Seekers

  • Complete every profile survey: sites use your profile to decide which surveys to send you, so a blank one means fewer invitations.
  • Use a separate email address, so survey invitations stay out of your job search inbox.
  • Track what each site pays you per hour, and drop the ones that stay at the bottom.
  • Expect ID checks: Survey Junkie, Branded Surveys and Prime Opinion can all ask you to verify your identity before a cash out.
  • Keep a record for taxes: In the US, survey rewards count as income even if no tax form arrives. A site only has to send you a Form 1099-MISC once it pays you $2,000 or more in a year, up from $600 before 2026 (IRS instructions). Keep a simple record of what each site pays you.
  • Pair it with cashback: if you are buying essentials anyway, Swagbucks and MyPoints also pay for cashback shopping and grocery receipts.

What About Freelancing or AI Training Work?

Some remote work pays far more per hour than surveys. DataAnnotation lists $25 to $50 an hour for general AI training projects, and Outlier shows each project's rate before you start, but both screen applicants first. Surveys pay less and start straight away, so they cover the gaps while you apply for that work too. Our strategy builder suggests both, matched to your background.

Bottom Line

Surveys will not cover rent, but a few reliable sites that pay quickly can cover small bills while you look for your next role. Join three to five of the sites above, get on Prolific's waitlist, and keep surveys to the gaps in your day.
